This review is from: Giinii GH-8DNM 8-Inch Digital Picture Frame (Brown)Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)

Digital Picture Frames are a bit like VCRs - their lack of keyboard or mouse forces them to use clumsy and non-intuitive user interfaces. Some manufacturers address this shortcoming by limiting functionality. GiiNii have gone in the other direction - this is a feature-rich device. This isn't necessarily a good thing.Let's start with the display: it's 8", measured along the diagonal. This works out to a picture 6.25" by 4.75". The aspect ratio is a conventional 4:3. The display is bright and clear, with a nice wide viewing angle. No problems there. There are SD and USB interfaces, allowing you to load your pictures directly from your camera's memory card, or from a thumb drive. You have a choice of displaying the pictures directly from the memory card, or preloading your pictures into the frame's internal memory. There are good reasons why the second option is better: - during preload, the frame will reduce the resolution of your pictures to fit the display,so it can generally pack far more pictures into its internal memory (a generous 2Gb).- once preloaded, you can remove your memory card and put it in a safe place. This is important, since the frame can actually write to the memory card. Very bad idea - I can't imagine why GiiNii did this. The frame can display movies, complete with sound. This is a particularly nice feature if you're sending the frame as a gift to a distant relative - apart from the usual Kids' Christmas Message, you could put your camera on a tripod and film an hour or so of your garden in the Spring, or maybe a log fire - use your imagination. You can also load mp3 audio files into the frame, and play them through the two tiny, tinny speakers (although it's hard to see why you would bother). What else? Well, the frame can be used as an alarm clock, with some rather nice clock faces. Apparently more will be available for download on GiiNii's website (though I couldn't find any). The user interface for selecting all these options, is, of course, lousy. There is a small remote control, which is very short-range, but it follows the same, clumsy interface as the buttons on the back of the screen. After a while, you get used to it: the User Manual helps, a bit. All digital picture frames seem to share this failing. The user interface is particularly limited when you attempt to organize the pictures in the frame's internal memory. The frame comes with a mini-USB cable, however, which allows you to attach the frame to a PC. It then becomes much simpler to copy photos back and forth between the PC and the frame. There are plenty of other options, including some power-saving features, and some built-in slideshow formats, to jazz-up the display. To sum up, this is a fully featured device, with a good display and lots of goodies, but with a clumsy user interface. I don't like the fact that it can write data into your SD card....

This review is from: Giinii GH-8DNM 8-Inch Digital Picture Frame (Brown)I purchased this frame from Staples after a nightmare of an experience with my Pandigital frame. Because of the reviews on the giinii, I decided to make the leap after being wooed by the video aspect. I tend to shoot a lot miscellaneous videos of my kids with my Canon PowerShot (SD-1000) and having the ability to play videos on the frame was a big plus (unlike Pandigital's claim their frame plays videos, it actually works on this one! The colors are great and setting up the frame was really easy. I liked how I was able to figure most of the things out without having to read the clunky user manual. The remote control and extra mat is a nice touch. There was an in box flyer indicating I can purchase replacement frames through the giinii website which is pretty cool since I tend to switch things up every year or so....

This review is from: Giinii GH-8DNM 8-Inch Digital Picture Frame (Brown)I must say I was really looking forward to this picture frame: it seemed to have everything I was looking for without any of the nonsense that accompanies most electronic products. However, when the frame arrived, it wouldn't turn on. So I called GiiNii to see what was going on, but they told me that I'd have to talk to my seller to get a refund. There was simply nothing GiiNii could do about my problem. I emailed the seller, Tech For Less, to check out what my refund options were and they told me they were sending another one, free of charge! This one arrived faster than the first and it works great. Yes, I will admit, the interface on the frame itself is a little awkward to use, but the remote that comes with it is easy to figure out. I haven't put any pictures on it yet, but I'm relieved that at least this one works. If anybody out there is waiting around on the fence, I'd jump on this picture frame right here. It's high quality, and low priced....
