This review is from: Pentax 100mm f/2.8 WR D FA smc Macro Lens for Pentax Digital SLR CamerasThis new WR Macro is as slick as they come: sharp, quiet, quick focus, but manually adjustable to pick the exact point you want to be the center of attention. I'm certainly glad I got a 100mm macro,(my first)as getting close to objects like flowers on the ground is easier given the greater distance-to-object possible for the same size image. Then there's also avoiding your own shadow. The blurred backgrounds are also exceptionally smooth turning leafy backgrounds into art backdrops that really add to the picture. A longer zoom macro would be even handier, but none I know can match the crisp image of this one....
This review is from: Pentax 100mm f/2.8 WR D FA smc Macro Lens for Pentax Digital SLR CamerasI used to have the older version of this lens and it was one of my favorite. I love shooting flowers up close and the 1:1 macro lenses are excellent for that. In December I decided to sell my old one when I picked up the Limited 35 mm macro. I love that lens too but it doesn't get close enough for the way I like to work. Now that spring is here I've picked up the new weather sealed version and it's pretty fantastic. The bokeh is soft and very pleasant, maybe even better than the older model. The build quality of the new lens feels a lot sturdier than the old one. These macro lenses protrude a long distance from the body when they are close focusing, that hasn't changed between the two but the WR version feels more solid. The new lens hood is a tad smaller than the old one which makes it easier to carry around. I think that it's the same length but the opening facing the subject seems narrower. The lens motor is not the SDM variety, like the "star" lenses, so it's not whisper quiet but it's no louder than the old one. This new version does not have an aperture ring so I don't imagine that it would work well with an older camera body but if you have a modern Pentax DSLR I think that it's a good upgrade. The better build quality and weather resistance were worth sacrificing the aperture ring for me....
This review is from: Pentax 100mm f/2.8 WR D FA smc Macro Lens for Pentax Digital SLR CamerasI've got this lens with Pentax K5 for my 50th birthday. I did not use much the lens, but for portrait photography is good. The subject is in focus and the background is blurred even with aperture f9. It searching the subject for focusing, but if you help - it doing fast and quiet. That is the reason for 4 stars. Just to mention - you can focus with this lens by hand wit-out switching manual mode.Filter size is 49mm - the cheapest in the market. I hoop it will last long....
